A delegation from the Republic of Maldives is participating in the Tenth Bi-Annual Meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). The three-day virtual meeting, which will be held from 29 June to 1 July 2020, includes a half-day meeting of IORA’s Sub-Committee on Finance. The meeting is attended by IORA’s 22 Member States, the Secretary-General of IORA and Specialized Agencies.

The meeting will take note of the progress on the six priority areas and two cross-cutting areas of IORA. The six priority areas include Maritime Safety and Security, Trae and Investment Facilitation, Fisheries Management, Disaster Risk Management, Academic and Scientific Cooperation, and Tourism Promotion and Cultural Exchanges. The two cross-cutting areas of IORA are Women’s Economic Empowerment and Blue Economy. Member States will also discuss preparations for upcoming meetings of IORA, the response to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as IORA’s engagements with its international partners.

The meeting is being convened under the Chairmanship of the United Arab Emirates and is held under the theme “Promoting a Shared Destiny and Path to Prosperity in the Indian Ocean”. The Maldives delegation is led by His Excellency Dr. Asim Ahmed, Ambassador-at-large, accompanied by Ms. Fathimath Najwa, Joint Secretary, and Mr. Ahmed Salman Zaki, Assistant Director.
