Foreign Minister Shahid holds a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of Oman

Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid had a telephone conversation with his counterpart His Excellency Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdallah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, this morning.

During the telephone call, the two Ministers exchanged updates pertaining to the ongoing situation of the Covid-19 pandemic in their respective countries. Minister Shahid briefed the Omani Foreign Minister with regard to the precautionary measures undertaken by the Maldives while lifting restrictions and resuming economic activity in the ‘new normal’, with the Maldives preparing to welcome tourists again, starting from 15 July. Minister Shahid further elaborated on the long-lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Maldives economy, and President Solih’s plans for resilience building, economic recovery, and social services. Minister Shahid also commended the Government of Oman for their proactive effort in addressing the effects of COVID-19, and successfully monitoring and containing the spread of the virus using innovative technologies.

Minister Abdallah affirmed the decision of Oman Air to resume direct flights to Maldives after 17 July, and stressed on the importance of people-to-people contact, and business-to-business interactions to ensure economic recovery and sustenance.  

The Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their dedication to further strengthening the bond between the Maldives and Oman, through bilateral exchanges and cooperation in the multilateral fora, on issues of mutual interest.
