The Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ambassador Asim Ahmed today presented his Letter of Credence to the Deputy Director General of the World Trade Organisation, Mr. Xiaozhun Yi in an official ceremony held at the Centre William Rappard.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Asim Ahmed thanked Deputy Director General Xiaozhun Yi for the warm welcome and conveyed compliments from the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Maldives to the rules-based multilateral trading system and reassured to further strengthen cooperation with the World Trade Organisation.

The President of the Republic of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, appointed Ambassador Asim Ahmed as the new Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the World Trade Organisation on 20 October 2020, following approval by the People’s Majlis of the Republic of Maldives on 12 October 2020.

The Maldives is an active member of the World Trade Organization, having been a member of the WTO since 31 May 1995. Prior to joining the WTO, the Maldives was a signatory to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), since 19 April 1993.
