Minister Shahid participates as Chief Guest at the valedictory session of the Virtual Workshop on Good Governance Practices in a Pandemic

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid today, addressed the participants of the Virtual Workshop on Good Governance Practices in a Pandemic. Minister Shahid joined as the chief guest at the valedictory session of the workshop.

The workshop was organized by the National Center of Good Governance of India together with Civil Service Commission of the Maldives from 23-24 February 2021. The workshop consisted of knowledge sharing sessions to disseminate good governance practices in fighting the Covid19 pandemic. A total of 882 officials from all the public sector offices, including Permanent Secretaries, officials from Ministries, atoll and island offices, took part in this workshop.

This workshop was carried out under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Maldives Civil Service Commission and National Centre for Good Governance during the visit of Prime Minister of India to the Maldives in June 2019. The purpose of the MoU was to enhance cooperation in training and capacity building of Maldivian civil servants.

Speaking at the valedictory session of the workshop, Minister Shahid noted that the civil service is integral to the country’s growth and development, and that civil servants play an important role in ensuring the promotion of democracy, and upholding the values of good governance. He noted that civil servants and policymakers have had to make many adjustments during the pandemic, and in that regard, trainings and sharing of best practices and experiences is essential to learning and further development. Minister Shahid also thanked the Government of India for the tremendous support offered for capacity building of civil servants and noted that cooperation in human resource development is a key and long-standing area of the Maldives-India Partnership.
