Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid reaffirms the Government’s commitment to multilateralism on the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter

Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Abdulla Shahid today delivered a statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter.

In his statement made through video, Minister Shahid highlighted the principles and ideals of the Charter that give voice and purpose to all nations on the basis of equality, despite the size of nations. Minister Shahid also called on all Member States of the UN to strengthen multilateral cooperation to address global problems and challenges, such as climate change, sustainable development and natural disasters. He further reaffirmed the Maldives’ readiness to work with all nations to promote the shared ideals for peace, economic progress and social justice.

The Charter of the United Nations was signed in San Francisco, United States of America on 26 June 1945, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on 24 October 1945. The Charter calls for the UN to maintain international peace and security; promote social progress and better standards of life; strengthen international law; and promote human rights.
