Minister Shahid extends a message of solidarity to Foreign Minister of Mauritius
12 August 2020
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid sends a message to Nandcoomar Bodha, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of Mauritius, expressing solidarity concerning the ongoing oil spill crisis in Mauritius.
Minister’s message reads as follows:
“I was deeply concerned to learn of the oil spill in Mauritius, causing unprecedented ecological damage and a negative impact on the nation’s economy. The ocean that we share remains an integral part of our respective economies, our culture, and our daily lives. Given our close proximity and identical topography, we are profoundly saddened by the situation presented with this ecological crisis.
The situation is also a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our ecosystems to man-made disasters of this magnitude. We strongly believe that efforts to mitigate similar disasters on our fragile natural environment must take priority in the international fora.
During this difficult situation, the Government and the people of Maldives, stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Mauritius. We express our commitment to work together with renewed impetus, to achieve environmental sustainability nationally, and globally.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.”
